How Piedmont Park became the backdrop for Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Instant Family’

The A-Scene sat down with director Sean Anders, who revealed that "Instant Family" is based on his own story, when he and his wife adopted three children 7 years ago.
"Instant Family" has been shooting around town since March. The movie's production signs reading "IF" are a common sight in the ATL.

When Pete and Ellie decided to start a family, they stumbled into the world of foster care adoption.

They found a rebellious teenager, two smaller kids and the hope of becoming one “Instant Family."

The A-Scene sat down with director Sean Anders, who revealed this story is based on his own experience when he and his wife adopted three children, 7 years ago.

“So many things that happened along the way we’re obviously scary and all of that but very funny so I decided to make a comedy on the topic,” Anders said.

So, he pitched the idea to Mark Wahlberg and Octavia Spencer who both have passions for adoption. Before you know it, crews were spotted filming in Atlanta in March.

“We shot all over Atlanta, like you said, in Piedmont Park. We shot at the Tyler Perry Studios, the new facilities which were fantastic," Anders said. "I think the main thing for us was the people. It was the crew that we put together. We just had fun with all people on the movie."

So, the moral of this story? Adoption can be tough. But it rings more joys than anything else.
