Officer fires shots after long chase, crash

The shooting happened near Friendship Road and Highway 211.

A Gwinnett County police officer shot at a suspect with a gun in Hall County following a pursuit Friday morning, police said.

According to Gwinnett County police, an officer recognized a wanted person in the area of Hamilton Mill Road and Buford Highway.

Police attempted a traffic stop, but said the suspect drove away and fired a shot out of the vehicle toward them. Officers pursued the car to Braselton, where the suspect began to drive in the wrong direction.

Police did a "pit and pin," where one officer performed a pit maneuver and another officer used the patrol car to pin the suspect's car door shut. This happened near the Friendship Road and Highway 211.

While the suspect was inside the car, an officer said the suspect reached for a weapon. The officer fired a shot through the windshield of the patrol car at the suspect.

The suspect suffered two injuries: one to his jaw, the other to his hand. It's not yet known if the officer struck the suspect with his round, or if somehow the suspect injured himself, police said. He was listed in stable condition.

The GBI is investigating the incident.
