Number of guns found in metro Atlanta schools on the rise

The number of guns being found in metro Atlanta's schools are on the rise.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - A gun was brought into a Fulton County classroom Thursday and discharged. Two students were injured by the bullet and an investigation is underway.

This isn't the first time a gun was found in a Georgia classroom.

After data from Georgia’s Department of Education revealed that the number of guns being brought to school is slowly on the rise, we wanted to see specifically where and how many.

According to Georgia Department of Education disciplinary data for the 2016-2017 school year, this is not the first time a gun has been found on Banneker school grounds. In that time period, 21 guns were found inside Fulton County schools, one of those at Banneker High School.

A total of 149 guns were brought on school grounds across Georgia last school year, though most of the top five school districts where guns were found were in metro Atlanta. Fulton, as previously noted had 21 guns found on campus. DeKalb County reported 18 guns found. APS had 16 guns found. Chatham and Cobb counties rounded out the top five with 6 and 5 guns respectively.

After an incident that took place at Banneker High School in College Park left two students injured with gunshot wounds, their solution was to ban backpacks from school.

While the initial investigation into this incident indicates the gun fired accidentally, Fulton County School Police said they plan to file criminal charges “against everyone involved in the incident according to the district policy.”
