Driver cited for hitting mother, child with van Halloween night

GSP said they were walking in the crosswalk when they were struck.

STATHAM, Ga. -- A mother and child were seriously injured after being struck by a van while trick-or-treating in Statham, Halloween night

The Georgia State Patrol said around 8:30 p.m., Jeffery Craig, 47, of Statham was driving his 2010 Chrysler Town and Country van heading north on Jefferson Street at Railroad Street when he hit Katlin Bentley, 29, and her 5-year-old son.

Police said the mother and child, from Bogart, were walking in the crosswalk when they were struck. The child was wearing a Halloween costume.

The mother was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital for her injuries. The child was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Egleston Hospital.

Craig was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
