A local family hopes a new movie helps spread awareness about craniofacial disorder.
The movie Wonder, starring Julia Roberts, who is from Smyrna, tells the inspiring story of Auggie Pullman, a 5th grader living with a craniofacial disorder. Craniofacial disorder is an abnormality of the face and/or the head and can bring unwanted stares. The disorder affects 600,000 people in the United States.
"This is isn't just a movie. This is life. Its something we live everyday," said Rebeka Edmonds.
The movie hits close to home for Rebeka and her husband Chris. Their adopted son Jose has craniofacial disorder.
"The message of the movie is important for parents to teach their kids that just because somebody looks different, doesn't mean they are not a real person and they don't know how to have fun and enjoy life," Rebekah said.
The couple invited their family and friends from their church, Smoke Rise Baptist, to watch the movie. Some made signs with a hopeful message.
They hope the movie will help spread awareness.
"Don't shun away from kids like Jose who have Craniofacial differences. Embrace them and teach your kids to do the same. Always choose kind, just as the message of the movie," Rebekah said.
