SAN LUIS, Ariz. — Ten miles away from the San Luis Port of Entry, Border Patrol agents say nearly 400 Central Americas crawled into the United States Monday through holes dug directly under the border wall.
"We don't know how long it took the smugglers to dig these seven holes underneath the border wall. We just know they were encountered as they entered the other side of the border wall," said Border Patrol Agent Jose Garibay.
Border Patrol agents made it clear these migrants entered through holes, not tunnels.
"The United States Border Patrol is constantly building intelligence in order to combat these trafficking organizations that are operating in our sector and even though at this time we haven't apprehended any smugglers, we are constantly targeting them and gaining intelligence in order to apprehend them in the future," Garibay said.
The Border Patrol says it took several hours to process the unusually large group -- eighty-seven percent of the group being families.
The Border Patrol says all of those who entered received health screenings.
