ATLANTA — You'll soon have more options for faster mobile service in Atlanta.
Verizon announced Atlanta will be among 20 new cities to get its 5G network sometime this year.
5G is a buzzword right now in wireless technology, but what does it really mean?
It stands for the fifth-generation of mobile communication networks and it should offer faster, more reliable service.
For now, most people use 3G or 4G/LTE networks, introduced in 2001 and 2009 respectively. So it's about time for an upgrade right?
5G offers three main benefits:
- Increased connectivity, allowing more people to communicate at the same time.
- Shorter delays when sending and receiving data, making virtual reality video possible with no pauses or glitches.
- Faster speeds, we're talking 10 to 100 times faster, meaning that two-hour movie you plan to download could take as little as four seconds.
AT&T already announced the technology here in Atlanta. Sprint is expected in May. Experts say you likely need a new phone or device to take full advantage of 5G, and carriers will be launching them soon - if they haven't already.
Verizon, today, announced a new Samsung Galaxy 5G device, but it’ll run you at least $1,300.
