Georgia has 12th most expensive average grocery bill in the country, report says

ATLANTA — Sticker shock is an all-too-common thing at the grocery store these days, but according to a new report it's particularly felt by Georgians.

The resource website HelpAdvisor looked at U.S. Census Household data for the first week of last November to rank 48 states plus Washington, D.C. on their average weekly grocery bill (the report excludes Hawaii and Alaska).

According to the data reviewed by HelpAdvisor, Georgians are spending an average of $278.32 a week on groceries -- the 12th highest weekly bill in the country.

Georgia ranks just behind Utah ($278.41) and ahead of New Jersey ($274.69). The national average is $270.21, according to the report.

The full top 10 includes:

1. California -- $297.72
2. Nevada -- $294.76
3. Mississippi -- $290.64
4. Washington -- $287.67
5. Florida -- $287.27
6. New Mexico -- $286.39
7. Texas -- $286.19
8. Louisiana -- $282.95
9. Colorado -- $279.98
10. Oklahoma -- $279.16

The report also details the most expensive cities for groceries, with Atlanta coming in at No. 10 with an average weekly bill of $277.54, a little less than the state average. The puts Atlanta ahead of cities including Philadelphia, Boston, Phoenix and Detroit.
