Bassett is an honorary Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy recipient known for iconic performances, including in "Black Panther," filmed right here in Atlanta.
During the ceremony, she touched on the theme of perseverance, evoking figures such as actress Hattie McDaniel and trailblazing Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to inspire graduates to keep their heads high as they enter the world.
Bassett also received a Doctor of Fine Arts honorary degree alongside Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was also in attendance.
Spelman's sister school, Morehouse College, had its own high-profile commencement speaker, with President Joe Biden stopping by to deliver the address.
