Cardi B apologizes to Bernice King for 'Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement' skit

The skit, called "The Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement," riffs off the popular Bravo reality series, but features wives and other prominent women of the Civil Rights era.

ATLANTA — Rapper Cardi B is apologizing to the King family after the premiere of a rather cringe-worthy skit.

The skit, called "The Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement," riffs off the popular Bravo reality series, but features wives and other prominent women of the Civil Rights era.

In the roughly 2 minute clip, Cardi B plays Coretta Scott King, wife of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as she and other women try to organize a rally.

Throughout the Real Housewives-style skit that plays up the pettiness between Coretta and Betty Shabazz, wife of Malcom X, references are made to Dr. King's supposed infidelity. It also irreverently quips how "nothing could go wrong for Martin in Memphis," the city in which King was assassinated. The clip ends with a joke about Dr. King sleeping with "The Iggy Azalea of the Civil Rights Movement" as a perfect example of what the movement was all about.

Unsurprisingly, the skit, which also happened to be released the same day as the anniversary of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech, did not go over well with Dr. King's family.

In a tweet, Bernice King wrote she looked forward to talking with the rapper soon, after Cardi supposedly reached out to apologize for the video.

Martin Luther King, III also told TMZ he was "deeply disappointed" with the timing of the skit.

The sketch is part of "Wild 'N Out" star Rip Michael's new show, "Off the Rip," according to TMZ.
