9/11 Remembrance ceremonies in metro Atlanta | List

Here are some ways to remember those who died in the tragedy.

ATLANTA — Yearly, people gather in cities all across America and some beyond to remember those who were lost in the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed when al-Qaida hijackers crashed four jetliners into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and a field in southwest Pennsylvania. 

Here's a list of events in metro Atlanta and beyond where they are being honored: 

September 11th Remembrance Ceremony

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 8 a.m.
  • Where: Stockbridge City Hall, 4640 North Henry Blvd., Stockbridge, Georgia
  • Description: The City of Stockbridge is hosting its annual remembrance ceremony to honor the 9/11 victims. Local schools, first responders, and citizen groups will participate. Free parking is available at City Hall, with light refreshments provided.

Carry The Load - National Day of Service & Remembrance

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Where: Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia
  • Description: Volunteers will clean headstones and beautify the cemetery grounds as part of a nationwide effort to remember those who served and sacrificed. Over 2,000 volunteers will take part at 67 cemeteries across the country.

AFRD Blue Mass

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024
  • Where: Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta, Georgia
  • Description: Atlanta Fire Rescue, in collaboration with the Atlanta Police Department and city officials, will host a Blue Mass to honor 9/11 victims and recognize public safety professionals and first responders.

9/11 Day of Service with Hands on Atlanta

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Where: GSU Convocation Center, Atlanta, Georgia
  • Description: More than 1,000 volunteers will gather to pack 500,000 meals for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. 11Alive anchor Aisha Howard will emcee the afternoon shift of this event, which is part of a nationwide service initiative.

LaGrange Fire Department's Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. (Registration starts at 8 a.m.)
  • Where: Callaway Stadium, LaGrange, Georgia
  • Description: Participants will climb 110 stories, symbolizing the height of the World Trade Center towers. The $25 registration fee supports the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund. Limited T-shirts are available for early arrivals.

"Beyond the Call of Duty" Recognition Ceremonies

  • When:
    • Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. (SW Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road, SW)
    • Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 12:45 p.m. (Atlanta Fire and Rescue HQ, 266 Peachtree St. SW)
  • Description: The City of South Fulton will honor Officer Terrance Harris for saving a citizen from a burning building, along with establishing an annual First Responders Day.

City of Roswell 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. (Moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.)
  • Where: Roswell City Hall, Roswell, Georgia
  • Description: The event will feature remarks from city officials, a timeline reading, a color guard presentation, and a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., marking the moment the first plane struck the North Tower.

23rd Annual 9/11 Patriot's Day Ceremony

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 8:40 a.m.
  • Where: Veterans Park, Watson Government Complex, 240 Constitution Blvd., Dallas, Georgia
  • Description: The City of Dallas will host its 23rd annual ceremony at its new 9/11 Memorial location. The community is encouraged to attend and honor the heroes of 9/11.

Remembering the Heroes – 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024
  • Where: Veterans Park, 9/11 Memorial Site, Dallas, Georgia
  • Description: The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department will host a ceremony to honor the men and women who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
