ATLANTA — One year ago, on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, Atlanta Police found the body of 37-year-old Sutton Tennyson dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside the garage of his southwest Atlanta home.
Tennyson was the ex-fiancé of reality television star Angela Simmons. Simmons is best known as part of the family of Joseph "Rev Run" Simmons from MTV's "Run's House" and its spinoff "Daddy's Girls."
Police investigators said that at the time the incident occurred, Tennyson had been talking in the the driveway of a home under renovation in the 600 block of Jewel Drive, S.W., with another man.
At the time of Tennyson's death, Simmons' heartbreak was evident on social media, saying, "Thank you for leaving behind my greatest gift. I'm hurting. I'm numb. Thank you for the out pouring of love everyone. I cant believe I'm even saying Rest In Peace Sutton. I promise to hold down SJ in every wat I promise."
Her pain was still evident on Sunday morning as she marked one year since Tennyson's death. She posted photos of Tennyson on her Instagram account with tender words.
"Woke up earlier than usual today. Realized God wanted to talk to me. And today marks a year since you left us," she said.
The first photo of the Instagram post shows Tennyson sleeping with their infant son, also asleep, on his chest.
"Sutton, You left us exactly a year ago today. I want to let you know your baby boy is flourishing, he’s growing. He’s everything you knew he’d be and even more. I look at him everyday....and I see you so much. You’d be so proud of him. The way I’m proud of him. He talks to me about you before bed," she said. "He’s adorable Sutton. There’s so much I want to tell you. But I know you are with us everyday. I can never repay you or thank you enough for the light you have brought to my life. He’s so precious. And we miss you. So much more to say. But thank you for everything. Gone but never forgotten."
Four days after Tennyson's murder, authorities arrested 44-year-old Michael Williams for his death.
Williams was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and murder.
In a preliminary hearing in late November 2018, evidence was presented that placed Williams at the Jewel Drive home on the day of the shooting.
A witness told an Atlanta homicide detective who testified at the preliminary hearing that at one point when the two men were talking, the witness said he heard the conversation become heated. The witness told the detective he believed the conversation was about money.
The detective said the witness told him Tennyson walked away, with his back to the man he was arguing with. That's when he said he heard gunshots.
Other evidence presented during that hearing indicated that Williams had been previously found guilty of murder in New Jersey in 1996 and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Fulton County Magistrate Court Judge Holly Hughes found enough probable cause to bound the case over for trial.
In addition, given his past felony conviction and weapons that were discovered in his home, Judge Hughes said she considered it a risk to release Williams.
