ATLANTA — Mayor Keisha Lance-Bottoms kicked off the City of Atlanta’s Summer youth programming, which will engage more than 5,000 young adults across Atlanta.
During the event, she surprised them with a performance by Hot 100 hitmaker, Lil Nas X.
Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, is a 19-year-old from Atlanta. His song, "Old Town Road," has achieved viral fame and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100.
It was removed from the Hot Country Songs charts after debuting at No. 19 for "not being country enough," causing a major controversy. Billboard immediately received backlash for the decision.
Many joined in on the conversation over what qualified as country music and argued that Lil Nas X's race was one of the reasons the song was removed from the Country charts.
When Billy Ray Cyrus jumped in on the remix, it garnered a record-number of streams and became the biggest single of 2019, so far.
