Louis Gossett Jr. on legacy, uplifting black community, East Point schools

The A-Scene's Ryan J. Dennis caught up with the cinema and television icon in Atlanta.

EAST POINT, Ga. — The A-Scene caught up with Louis Gossett Jr. during his surprise visit to students at Tri-Cities Church in East Point, Ga. With over six decades of work under his belt, Gossett feels his purpose “just gets bigger and bigger.”

Gossett feels his mission is greater than film alone. The iconic cinema star, most known for his Oscar winning performance in An Officer and a Gentleman, is also an author and activist. Gossett’s great desire to give back and inspire the next generation is a message that he hopes all will adopt. It’s a mission that his family instilled in him at a very young age. “Take care of the, water, air, and the children,” Gossett lists those as the most important resources in the world. “If we do that philosophy…(then) we are paying attention to what were supposed to be on the planet to do,” said Gossett.

The Milledgeville Film festival honored Gossett Saturday April 23 with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the entertainment industry and his body of work in film. It’s an honor that Gossett says he is grateful to receive. “It’s a blessing, it means somebody on this planet gets what I want to contribute.”

With so many film credits under his belt Gossett says he is proud to be rooted right here in Atlanta, just minutes from Pinewood Studios. “Georgia is doing more movies than Hollywood right now,” Gossett proudly boasts. The star is currently working on the Atlanta filmed HBO drama series, Watchmen.
