ATLANTA-- Convincing artists to perform live before 7:00 a.m. isn't easy. Most of us are barely functional before two cups of coffee, let alone at peak performance. James David Carter jumped at the chance and charmed all of us along the way.

"That may be the best country audition I've ever heard," said Blake Shelton.

On Atlanta Alive, Carter said he's influenced by a wide variety of musicians: from Stevie Wonder to Bread to Keith Urban. "I credit my mom for all that music. I was heavily influenced in the early 90s by guys like Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, James Taylor," Carter said. "I like all kinds of music, I'm not just focused on listening to country music. But that's more of where I land, it's more of who I am as a person."

Carter invited the entire Atlanta Alive team to sing background. They declined. "We're backing away," Jaye Watson said.

He did convince Chesley McNeil to sing duet. And it was awesome.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesday on NBC at 8:00 pm.
