Study shows longer allergy seasons with children bearing brunt of effects

A study shows longer allergy seasons are caused by more freeze-free days each year. 11Alive gets tips on how to prepare.

ATLANTA — A recent study released by Climate Central reveals a concerning trend: allergy seasons are becoming longer, with children bearing the brunt of its effects. The study, which examines the correlation between climate change and allergen production, indicates that the average allergy season in Metro Atlanta has extended by approximately 33 days.

According to experts, the primary driver behind this phenomenon is increased carbon pollution, which contributes to heightened allergen production. Dr. Joanna Dolgoff from Wellstar Health System notes a noticeable uptick in allergy-related symptoms among her patients, particularly in children. Symptoms such as congestion, sore throats and watery eyes have become more prevalent, she said.

In response to these findings, Dr. Dolgoff offered practical advice for parents looking to mitigate their children's allergy symptoms.

"Keep them away from pollen as much as you can," she suggested. "When they are indoors, close windows and doors to keep pollen outside. Additionally, regular bathing or showering can help remove pollen from their bodies."

Local families corroborate the study's findings, reporting prolonged allergy seasons and exacerbated symptoms in their children. Katie Campbell, a mother, noted that warmer weather coincides with heightened allergy symptoms for her family.

"Here comes the pollen; here come the symptoms," she remarked.

Andrew Leipold, another concerned parent, emphasized the need for proactive measures to address this issue.

"Living in Atlanta means enjoying the outdoors for much of the year," he said. "But if allergies continue to impact outdoor activities, changes must be made."

Overall, as allergy season extends its reach, experts and families alike stress the importance of taking preventative actions to safeguard against allergen exposure.
