Metro Atlanta shelter offers free adoptions amid overcrowding issues on Black Friday

Lifeline Animal Shelter is offering a Black Friday special from Friday until Cyber Monday on Nov. 27 in an ongoing partnership with PetCo Love.

ATLANTA — As metro Atlanta animal shelters deal with a huge surge of overcrowding, one shelter has decided to offer free adoptions for a holiday special.

Lifeline Animal Shelter is offering a Black Friday special from Friday until Cyber Monday on Nov. 27 in an ongoing partnership with PetCo Love.

The shelter is in desperate need to find homes for hundreds of pets, they announced in an Instagram post.

A month ago, the shelter discounted their adoption fees because of the overcrowded conditions often leaving animals at risk of euthanizing.

Lifeline has several locations in DeKalb, Midtown and several other locations.

Officials with the DeKalb County Animal Shelter previously cited staffing issues and veterinarian shortages.

"Over the past year, we have discussed the myriad challenges, including staffing and veterinary shortages, at length with DeKalb County," DeKalb Animal Shelter CEO Rebecca Guinn wrote. "Their leaders are partnering with us in support of several long-term solutions, which include overflow capacity and access to resources and veterinary care for pet owners in need."

Guinn said in October that they have about 615 dogs in the shelter that can sustain about 450 dogs comfortably leading to the overcapacity. County officials are looking for solutions to help minimize the issue.

Adoptions come with spay and neuter operations, vaccines and microchipped pets. Residents who adopt the pets will be saving many dogs this holiday season.

"That's a savings of more than $300, making it the best and most meaningful Black Friday deal of the season," an Instagram post from the shelter said.
