ATLANTA — Zoo Atlanta is welcoming another member to its sloth family.
The Hoffman two-toed sloth was born on Friday, August 9.
The newborn is the second offspring of Nutella and Cocoa. Nutella's firstborn was born on Father's Day last year, according to the zoo.
“We are very excited about the birth of Nutella’s infant,” said Gina Ferrie, the vice president of collections and conservation at the zoo.
The zoo stated in the news release that sloth infants develop faster than their infamous slow movement.
Most sloths are born fully furred with their eyes open and teeth already developed. They also have fully developed claws.
“Sloths have so many fascinating adaptations and behaviors that we can share with our Members and guests, and while they are not currently classified as endangered, they have an emerging conservation story that can help us appreciate the impact of human activities on wild animals and ecosystems," said Ferrie.
Hoffman's two-toed sloths face mounting threats in the wild because of habitat loss from illegal logging. The zoo stated that hundreds of sloths are electrocuted because they must use power lines to travel in fragmented forests.
You can visit the new infant and its mother, Nutella, at the zoo's KIDZone.
