Zoo Atlanta finally name bearcats after public vote

According to the zoo, the vote was a "close race," with almost 2,300 votes cast for the two sets of names proposed by the Zoo Atlanta Carnivore Team.

ATLANTA — Editor's note: The video above is from previous coverage of the animals.

For months, two bearcats have gone unnamed at Zoo Atlanta, but with the help of the public, the siblings have finally been named.

"Get ready to meet Oliver, Fern, and their brother Watson," the zoo said in a release on Thursday.

According to the zoo, the vote was a "close race," with almost 2,300 votes cast for the two sets of names proposed by the Zoo Atlanta Carnivore Team.

The two sisters and their brother are now looking forward to their next milestone of exploring their outdoor habitat. The babies were born to mother Bramble on Aug. 31 and were the first binturongs to be born at the zoo.

Despite their popular nickname, they are neither bears nor cats; instead, they are actually called bintlets or binturongs.

Officials with the zoo said the animals also have a distinct smell, similar to buttered popcorn or corn chips.

They are native to southern and southeast Asia, where they are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They face habitat loss from palm oil plantations, which can lead to unsustainable practices for animals. They also are traded as pets and hunted for their meat, according to officials.
