ATLANTA — Editor's note: The video above is on one of the zoo's other zebra inhabitants.
Zoo Atlanta is welcoming its newest member of Tuesday, a 2-year-old zebra named Imara, who arrived shortly after Christmas.
Right now, the zoo says Imara is going through a routine quarantine period before being released into her new habitat. The whole process will last about a month.
After that, the next plan is for her to meet one of the zoo's male zebras, Wembe, according to a statement. Zoo officials add that zebras are apparently very social creatures, so it will be good for her to have a friend.
From there, Imara will have a chance to frolic with the many other species in the zoo's African Savanna habitat.
“Zoo Atlanta is very happy to welcome Imara, particularly as a social companion for Wembe, who joined us in September,” said Sam Rivera, DVM, Vice President of Animal Health. “Zebras are icons among African wildlife, with an important story to tell of the interconnectedness of all life on the savanna – and the important ways humans are part of that story.”
