Woman celebrates 100th birthday with 100-year-old husband

In 1924, Calvin Coolidge was president, and a gallon of gas was 11 cents! A woman from Bloomsburg was born that year too and today celebrates her 100th birthday.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Living to see your 100th birthday is quite an accomplishment, but reaching that milestone six months after your husband did is almost unheard of. Meet Sharlet and Marshall Johnson.

"The doctor asked me a couple of years ago what keeps you going. I said kids and laughter," Sharlet Johnson said.

The Johnsons have been married for 78 years. Sharlet is celebrating her 100th birthday this week, and Marshall celebrated his on July 28th.

"I don't keep track of time anymore. I'm here, and that's all," Marshall Johnson said.

They are both patients at Geisinger 65 Forward near Bloomsburg. Employees held a birthday party for Sharlet.

The Johnsons have lived in the Bloomsburg area for most of their lives. Marshall served in the army in World War II and worked in a steel mill. Sharlet spent many years driving a school bus and working with 4H kids.

"There isn't a day that goes by that something doesn't crop up. I can picture it and think, oh yeah, and I'll have a big giggle about it again at all the stupid things we did," Sharlet said.

"When I started working here, and she started coming here, I was like, oh my gosh. She's still here," Sabrina Rosencrance said.

Sabrina Rosencrance works at Geisinger 65 Forward and says when she was in second grade, Sharlet was her bus driver.

"She was the sweetest lady. That's what I remember. When we lost her and got a different bus driver, I was so sad because she just loved kids and loved being around us. She was great," Rosencrance said.

Sharlet says she also taught many kids, including her own, how to sew over the years. In her spare time, she enjoys reading.
