ATLANTA — An Atlanta food institution known for its iconic Southern home cooking is reopening to the public, almost exactly two months after heavy rainstorms brought down a portion of the roof.
Mary Mac's Tea Room on Ponce de Leon shared on its Facebook page that its dining room will be open for business with its regular hours starting Wednesday, May 8.
"We’re so excited to see all our loyal customers soon!" the restaurant posted.
On March 6, the restaurant was forced to close after a pole fell down on top of the restaurant, partially collapsing the roof. The collapse came amid heavy overnight rains; water could be seen flowing from the building when emergency crews got to the scene. No one was hurt in the collapse.
Now, after "two long months and lots of hard work and dedication from our team," the restaurant said it is ready to greet customers once again -- with some new surprise changes. During the temporary closure, Mary Mac's said it made some much-needed updates to the interior of the more than 75-year-old establishment.
The restaurant thanked the public, the City of Atlanta, engineers and contractors who helped make the reopening possible.
"Your warm wishes and kind words have kept us moving during this difficult process, and we look forward to sharing our incredible Southern food and hospitality with you again soon," Mary Mac's said. "We can’t wait to welcome you back for a taste of your favorite dishes."
Mary Mac's has been in operation on Ponce since 1945, becoming an Atlanta fixture for Southern food. It's often been recognized as one of the city's favorite restaurants and, in 2018, was named one of the best in the country by Travelers' Choice for everyday dining.
