FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — If one Fulton County official gets his way, single-use plastic straws in the county will soon be eliminated from county businesses.
Ellis Kirby, Deputy COO for Infrastructure in Fulton County, proposed a resolution to a sustainability plan at a recent county commission board meeting.
"Ultimately we will phase out single-use plastics we feel need to go. That doesn't mean workers or people of Fulton County will not be able to have single-use plastics, we're just using less of them in our businesses, " Kirby said at the board meeting.
In 2017, the City of Norcross developed their own plan for sustainability which included similar policies. Norcross encouraged their citizens to buy more recyclable goods for their business and everyday use. The new Fulton County resolution implements some of Norcross's ideas for a small change.
The Deputy of Infrastructure also said that the city of Atlanta helped him design this sustainability resolution. Kirby claimed that Decatur and Athens-Clarke County government officials were interested in adopting a similar plan.
The resolution will take effect in January of 2020. It is said to "gradually" change the use of plastics in Fulton. People will likely see a difference in local businesses months after the resolution is implemented.
