ATLANTA — Don your best cape today in honor of some of the city's bravest patients.
The superheroes at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta are being celebrated with the sixth annual Cape Day.
According to Children's, Cape Day was started back in 2014 and "encourages the community to honor and celebrate the superhero patients battling illnesses and injuries at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta."
"Every day, our patients fight obstacles and face challenges that most of us could never imagine," Children's says on its website. "Like the athletes we admire as superheroes on the field, our patients suit up each day, prepared to give it their all to defeat illnesses and injuries. We wear the cape in honor of them."
People across the state can get involved by buying a cape or sponsoring someone else to wear a cape for $20 at the Children's website.
Across social media, Atlanta institutions have been cheering on patients with the hashtag #CapeDayATL.
Last year, 11Alive's Cheryl Preheim shared the very special story of 8-year-old Dwyane "DJ" Pitts and how Cape Day got its start.
He started wearing his cape when he was 3, after he drank chemicals that tore up his insides.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta faced the challenge of helping him recover, reconstructing his esophagus and stomach.
During his many months in the hospital, a nurse made him a cape out of a pillowcase. It encouraged his spirit to be strong, even when his body wasn’t.
DJ quickly became known as the little superhero. His mom said a celebrity even noticed.
“One day, Ludacris was here for an event and said ‘Hey, there is the Cape boy!’"
Georgia Tech's football team is celebrating Cape Day this year with a special uniform. Other organizations posted their support on social media.
Even Lil Nas X got in on the party.
