Woman recognized for providing more than 3 decades of foster care

Emma Patterson, 88, will retire after the child currently in her care graduates from high school.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A Montgomery County woman was honored Friday for the incredible impact she has had on her community, and children in need. Emma Thompson has been a foster parent for 33 years. At the age of 88, she plans to retire when the child currently in her care graduates from high school.

During her time as a foster parent, Thompson has cared for more than 30 children. Many of those foster children were in attendance when County Executive Marc Elrich recognized her on the last day of Foster Parent Appreciation Month.

"College graduates, business owners, medical professionals and accomplished athletes all came out of her house," Elrich said.

He praised Thompson's "amazing, generous heart."

Thompson has two biological children and also adopted two of the children that she fostered.

"You have a lot to be proud of," Elrich told Thompson. "You've quietly made a significant difference in the lives of dozens of children."

Thompson received a certificate of appreciation and thanks for her work.

Congratulations, Mrs. Thompson!
