Couple married for 70 years attends prom

For a little perspective, when the newly married couple shared their first apartment in D.C. rent was $97.50 a month.

WASHINGTON — Two very special seniors were just crowned prom king and queen as octogenarians attending the prom for a third time, and that's cause for celebration.

First at their D.C. public school some 70 years ago, and now at their senior living community in northern Virginia. Back in 1953, then teenagers, Donald Gonchar and Susan Adams went to Gonchar's senior prom together at what was then Western High School. Now that school is Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Northwest D.C.

Then in 1954, the pair went to Adams's prom, but later that year the pair married and they have been together ever since. Fast forward to this week, the couple attended their third prom not as the teenagers who graduated back then, but as 88- and 89-year-old seniors.

Ingleside Westminster at Lake Ridge, the senior living community center where the couple now resides, hosted a senior prom. The D.C. residents were even recognized by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to honor the couple as prom king and queen for the event.

For a little perspective, when the newly married couple shared their first apartment in D.C. rent was $97.50 a month, and when it went up to $102 they said it was too expensive. They've been in northern Virginia ever since.
