Heroes: These 5 UGA students save three people after witnessing car crash into pond

"We are grateful you were in the right place at the right time," the Burke County Sheriff's Office said.

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. — Five University of Georgia students are being hailed as heroes after they jumped into action to help save three people following a single-vehicle car accident in eastern Georgia recently.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office posted about their heroic actions in a social media post on Friday.

The five women, who are all students at UGA, according to the post, witnessed a car veer off the road along Ellison Bridge Road in Burke County before the car rolled into a pond.

After seeing what had happened, the sheriff's office said the students flipped their car around and went directly to the crash site.

The post said with zero hesitation, the five women -- Jane McArdle, Mary McCollum, Eleanor Cart, Clarke Jones and Kaitlyn Iannace -- jumped into the water as the white SUV was partially submerged and pulled the driver and two children who were inside the vehicle to safety.

The sheriff's office posted a photo of the five women and what the car looked like after it crashed into the water.

"The quick thinking and bravery of these women is absolutely admirable," the Burke County Sheriff's Office said. "We are grateful you were in the right place at the right time."

Burke County is less than 30 miles from Augusta, with the county seat being Waynesboro, Georgia. The sheriff's office did not say what day the wreck and rescue happened but said it happened "recently."
