SMYRNA, Ga. — A Cobb County American Legion is already hard at work preparing to host a free Thanksgiving dinner for the community.
Volunteers gathered at the American Legion Post 160 in Smyrna on Wednesday to smoke turkeys, but some of those birds had a greater purpose.
“We have three or four smoked turkeys that we’re gonna donate to the American Legion so they can have two types of turkey and all the trimmings," volunteer Ryan Marschark said.
The Legion is hosting a free sit-down Thanksgiving dinner beginning Thursday morning.
“We had a team, a small army of folks who came together to season the turkeys. That happened on Monday. They put all the seasonings on the turkeys and prepared them for smoking," American Legion member George Mitchell said.
The smoking process consists of watering, adding wood and spraying the birds down with apple juice. Organizers at the American Legion said this is something they do every single year.
This year, they expect at least 50 people to come and fellowship and enjoy a free Thanksgiving dinner.
“Anyone who is hungry. Anyone who is in need of family or friends, come by and join us for dinner. We’ll be here," Mitchell said.
The American Legion Post 160 free Thanksgiving feast starts at 11:30 on Thursday morning and runs until 2:30 p.m.
