When you’re a dog born with a condition such as short spine syndrome, which is thought to affect just seventeen dogs in the world, it helps if you have a big personality to bowl over potential pet parents. Meet Mojo, the gorgeous Border Collie that has overcome all obstacles to find his forever home at last.
Mojo’s story began on Facebook some five years ago. Julie LeRoy, the pet parent of a short-spine dog named Cuda, first came across Mojo after a follower shared his picture and shelter story to her popular social media page. Heartened, she shared the post and put Mojo in contact with a new pet parent, Maria Rall. However, two months ago, Julie received the sad news that Maria had succumbed to cancer, and that Mojo once again needed a new home. While a nearby rescuer named Rachel Bryant was happy to rehome Mojo, it soon became obvious that his senior age and spinal condition had caused a variety of health issues. What Mojo really needed was someone who had dealt with similar issues before, and was able to provide the love and attention he so needed.
Step forward Robin Stamey, a retired veterinarian, and her wife – the perfect new pet parents for Mojo. Robin said: “I like to rescue senior animals. I knew that [Mojo] might have some particular veterinary issues related to being a short-spine dog, and being a retired vet I felt I could give him a good home and deal with those issues.” Having met up with Julie and Rachel in Nashville, Tennessee, the Stameys were soon on their way home to Florida with Mojo.
Robin said of Mojo: “He looks like a living gargoyle. It’s like picking up a concrete block – very compact. Other than his physical appearance, he’s really no different than my other two dogs. I’ve since found out that he’s pretty normal… He runs, he plays, and he has a great time. He thinks he’s king of the world.”
