STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Cyber Monday is in full swing, and holiday shoppers nationwide — including here in Metro Atlanta — are snapping up deals online.
The holiday rush is palpable at Amazon’s state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Stone Mountain, where thousands of employees and robots work together to meet demand.
The facility, which opened in 2020, is one of the largest of its kind in Georgia. More than 3,000 employees operate the center, which is expected to process about 700,000 packages today — a significant uptick from its usual 600,000 daily shipments.
“This building is part of our first-mile network,” explained the site lead. “Orders placed online are pulled by robots, packed by employees, and sent to delivery stations before heading to customers’ doorsteps.”
A High-Tech Holiday Hub
The Stone Mountain facility is a robotics-driven warehouse where machines retrieve items from storage and deliver them to employees for packing. As Cyber Monday kicks off the peak holiday shopping season, Amazon prepared its inventory based on data from previous years, ensuring the most popular items are ready to ship.
Amazon’s proximity to Atlanta means that many packages processed at the Stone Mountain location can arrive on the same day, boosting busy shoppers. “A large portion of freight leaving this building goes to sub-same-day sites,” the site lead added.
Supporting Local Businesses
Beyond serving as a hub for global retail, the Stone Mountain facility is also helping local businesses. Amazon has partnered with companies in the area to include their products in Cyber Monday deals, providing them with a broader reach during the holiday season.
One local entrepreneur shared how the partnership has driven visibility and sales for their business: “Being featured on Amazon has been a game-changer for us, especially during the holidays.”
The Cyber Monday Rush
As the day unfolds, employees at the Stone Mountain facility will continue to work at full throttle. For many shoppers, the speed and convenience of online shopping are a holiday lifeline — and for Amazon, Cyber Monday marks the beginning of an intense few weeks of nonstop fulfillment.
