Young climber rising above the competition

Being a climber is all about routine. From equipment, to ropes, and chalk you’ve got to be ready to go.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Being a climber is all about routine. From equipment, to ropes, and chalk you’ve got to be ready to go.

10-year-old Reid Hennessey has been coming to Little Rock Climbing Center for two years, and after just six weeks on the junior varsity climbing team before he was called up to varsity. “So I heard about rock climbing and so I came here one day and I loved it” said Reid.

Reid’s mother Jennifer says rock climbing wasn’t in their plans at all just two years ago. “We tried everything, we tried soccer we tried baseball, I don’t even think we finished seasons.”

Reid’s climbing has taken him much further than just a “Little Rock”. He’s competed against climbers from Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. Earlier this year finished in the top ten to qualify for regionals in Houston.

“When I went on the rope climbing competition I loved it,that was one of my favorites.”

Reid plans to train very hard for the next 3 weeks until his trip to Houston, but like the best athletes, he knows a little summer break will help get you to the top. He says “If you train too much you’ll get all worn out so when you get on all these hard routes it’s not going to be good and you’ll fall.”

Reid will compete against his age group in Texas next month, there he hopes to qualify for divisionals in Atlanta.
