ATLANTA — Atlanta is the top U.S. city for Black homebuyers, according to a recent analysis by the Mortgage Research Center.
The ranking evaluates cities based on factors like approval rates, Black homeownership rates, and affordability. With high inclusivity scores and competitive mortgage approval rates, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta area stands out for providing favorable conditions for Black residents aiming to buy homes.
According to data from the Mortgage Resource Center, there is a 13.3% gap in approval rates between Black and White homebuyers. And although the disparity still exists in Atlanta, the gap is significantly smaller, at 9.5%.
The report highlights that Atlanta, known for its strong Black middle class and diverse economy, offers opportunities for wealth-building and homeownership stability.
Other cities highly rated for Black homebuyers include Washington, D.C., Dallas, and Charlotte, each praised for fostering inclusive housing markets.
The study stressed that while some cities are making progress, there is still a long way to go. The National Association of Realtors says only 44% of Black Americans own their homes compared to 72% of White Americans.
