ATLANTA — Atlanta's airport has again retained its title as the "world's busiest airport."
According to an industry report from Airports Council International, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's passenger traffic has not yet returned to its pre-pandemic levels of travel, but did surge nearly 24% in 2022 over 2021.
That left Atlanta with just shy of 94 million people passing through, more than 20 million more than the next-closest airport in Dallas/Fort Worth.
The number, however, is still about 15% below where Atlanta was at in 2019.
The 2022 list, according to Airports Council International, "welcomes back some of the world’s largest airport hubs as international traffic returns, marking an important milestone in air travel’s full recovery from the impact of the pandemic."
After Dallas, the top-10 was rounded out by the airports in Denver, Chicago, Dubai, Los Angeles, Istanbul, London, New Delhi and Paris.
According to the industry group, that top-10 saw a 51.7% gain in air traffic from 2021. It represents about 86% of their 2019 traffic.
Globally, the group estimates a 53.5% worldwide increase in air traffic in 2022 over 2021, or nearly 74% of 2019 levels.
“The ongoing recovery of air travel demand would not be possible without the continuous work of airports to provide a safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable air transport ecosystem for the passengers that we depend on and the communities we serve. ACI World will remain committed to representing the best interests of airports on the global stage during key phases of policy development and to promoting airport excellence," ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira said in a statement.
