Delta Air Lines to cut hundreds of flights this summer

The company acknowledged it will be pulling back some service during the summer in a release Thursday.

ATLANTA — Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines will be cutting about 100 flights daily around its network starting in July and extending through the beginning of August.

Delta did not explicitly say these are flights that have already been scheduled, which people could have already purchased tickets for

A release posted to Delta's website, however, said "if upcoming bookings for later this summer happen to change, our teams will provide customers with the next-best itinerary that gets them where they need to go with the shortest delay possible."

The release also added that "we’ll continue to proactively adjust select flights in the coming weeks," without specifying how.

A spokesperson said that "if there's any change to future bookings to flights in July" customers will be contacted by Delta with travel updates, with "no action on the part of our customers" necessary.

According to the release, Delta will "strategically decrease our flight schedule this summer" starting on July 1, as they "reduce service by approximately 100 daily departures."

The temporarily reduced service will end on Aug. 7, according to the release.

Delta said the reduced departures will primarily impact "markets in the U.S. and Latin America that Delta frequently serves."

The spokesperson said the reduction accounts for about 2% of the more than 4,000 daily departures that Delta conducts.

It's not clear how many of these flights would be scheduled to depart Atlanta.

The reduced service "will build additional resilience in our system and improve operational reliability for our customers and employees," Delta's release said.

"Delta teams strive to notify customers of itinerary changes as far in advance as possible. If your upcoming flight is impacted by a schedule change or delay, we’ll send updates directly to a mobile device or by email if contact information is included during booking or added later via My Trips online," the release added.

Delta also announced Thursday it will be issuing travel waivers to anyone whose Memorial Day Weekend flight gets impacted by weather.
