TORRANCE, Calif. -- Honda is recalling an estimated 65,000 of a certain model of its off-road vehicles due to concerns that part of it could catch fire.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, versions of its Pioneer 1000 3P and 5P are at risk due to the threat that the muffler can overheat causing the plastic heat shield to melt or even catch fire.

Often referred to as side-by-sides or recreational off-highway vehicles, the variants covered under this recall range from 2016 to 2018 and cost between $14,000 and $22,000. Those with specific VIN numbers pose a risk of fire that could lead to burns. Honda has released those details and is also contacting owners directly.
So far, the company has received 22 reports of the heat shield melting and another three reports of the heat leading to an actual fire. As of May 15, the company has had no reports of actual injuries, though.
Owners should immediately stop using the recalled vehicles and contact a Honda Powersports dealer for a free inspection and repair.
