Check your tax assessments, Douglas County officials say thousands may have an error

The error is only reflected in the paper notices that were mailed out. The calculations are correct in the Appraisal Department’s system, county officials said.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A software glitch resulted in thousands of Douglas County homeowners being sent incorrect tax assessments, according to officials. In a news release, the county explained how the error occurred last week.

Douglas County officials said it is using a new vendor and new computer-based appraisal system. On June 23, the county Appraisal Department sent out property tax assessment notices to more than 54,000 parcels. Officials said the Homestead Exemption was not included in some of the notifications that were mailed out due to a software glitch.

About 15,000 homeowners were impacted, the county said. Officials further explained the error is only reflected in the paper notices that were mailed out. The calculations are correct in the Appraisal Department’s system, officials said.

The county is in the process of notifying impacted property owners of the error by mail.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this technical error has caused,” said Douglas County Chief Appraiser Steve Balfour in a news release. “We are working diligently to notify the impacted property owners and remain committed to not only making this right, but making our team available to address any questions, issues, or concerns in an expeditious manner.”

While the Appraisal Department works to put the accurate assessments online, property owners who want to check their correct assessment, including their Homestead Exemption, can contact the Douglas County Appraisal Department at 770-920-7728.

Property assessment appeal applications are due by August 7.
