After six years as Chief of Police for the city of Atlanta, George Turner will retire at the end of the year. Thursday morning, Mayor Kasim Reed announced his replacement will come from within the department, 21-year-veteran Deputy Chief Erika Shields.
She currently serves on Turner's leadership team as his chief of staff.
"She has the foundation to be one of the best and most qualified police department leaders, I think, in the country," Mayor Reed said.
Shields will take over as Police Chief on Dec. 28.
