4-year-old playing with a lighter accidentally sets house on fire

No one from inside the house, or the fire crews fighting the flames, were injured.

BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — It could have ended in tragedy, but officials are using it as a reminder of the dangers of playing with fire.

Barrow County Emergency Services posted on Facebook that a 4-year-old was playing with a lighter in bed, Monday morning, when he accidentally started a fire inside his Auburn, Georgia home.

Crews responded to the home in the 1500 block of Willow Gate Way around 11 a.m. When they got there, the saw heavy smoke and flames coming from an upstairs bedroom window.

Firefighters immediately tried to put out the flames - but during the process, officials said the floor of an upstairs bedroom collapsed into the kitchen below.

Once the fire was put out, investigators were able to figure out - through evidence and an explanation - that the flames started from a bunk bed, and the child accidentally started the fire.

No one from inside the house, or the fire crews fighting the flames, were injured.

"If you have children in your life, please help us to continue to spread the word about the dangers of playing with fire," they concluded.
