Atlanta police officer arrested in DeKalb County after voicemail kidnap threat

An Atlanta police officer has been arrested for messages he allegedly sent to his ex-girlfriend - including one threatening to kidnap her.

According to DeKalb County Police Department spokesperson Shiera Campbell, Jason RIcketts was taken into custody by officers after he allegedly sent threatening texts to his ex around 1:30 a.m. before coming to her home in the 6900 block of Rogers Point.

The victim said he arrived asking about a male friend who was visiting. When she wouldn't open the door, authorities said he began to knock harder and try to pull open the door.

According to police, the victim was able to show detectives several harassing text messages sent by Ricketts and also played a voicemail where he said he would make her go to lunch with him even if he had to kidnap her.

Rickets was arrested and charged with harassing communication and has been ordered to stay away from the victim.

Atlanta Police Department spokesperson Stephanie Brown confirmed that Ricketts has been employed with the department since 2015 and is currently assigned to the APEX Unit.

That specific unit was established in 2011 to provide "proactive interdiction" in parts of the city experiencing high levels of drug and gun crime.
