Meet this 92-year-old Georgia councilwoman who just stepped into politics

At nearly 100 years old, Polly Garlington was elected to the Sharpsburg Town Council.

SHARPSBURG, Ga. — In a small Georgia town, a legacy envelopes the area.

Founded 200 years ago, there is wisdom within the walls that still stand in Sharpsburg, Georgia, and inside the homes of one of its oldest residents.

Polly Garlington was born just a few years after her home was built. But at 92, she's still considered to be the new kid on the block.

"I've been here 23 years. I am a new person in town," she said.

But despite not having as much experience living in the town as others in the area, she's a big part of its history after being recently elected to the town council. For Garlington, her age adds up to meaningful experiences in both life and politics. Her passion for politics dates back as far as she can remember, and she has the expertise to back it up.

But big-time competition in small-town politics meant she didn't win every time she ran. Twice, she lost an election by just one vote.

This time, she beat her opponent by six votes — 46 to 40. However, she said those slim margins should prove that everyone needs a change to be heard.

"I think you need to talk to be able to work through things. I don't think you can just show up to a council meeting and vote on a matter without getting other people's opinions," Garlington said.

That said, she is not afraid to share her opinions. Her age, perspective and expertise have helped her advocate for what she believes in. For instance, she's learned how to disagree respectfully over time.

In general, Garlington's roots may run deep in this world, but she's currently shining a light on a new history in the making. She said she's trying to recruit younger people in the town to become interested in politics and run for her seat, allowing her legacy to continue through the next generation. Although she does not believe she will run again once her current term is up, she's keeping her campaign signs handy just in case a second wind hits her.

But as the seasons change and time passes, Garlington's influence will forever be a part of the town's history — her words of wisdom surrounding the area for generations to hear.
