DC Police help celebrate longtime resident's 100th birthday with parade

Bessie Johnson, known as Grandma Johnson, turned 100 on Saturday.

WASHINGTON — DC police and firefighters are coming together to celebrate a longtime resident in Northeast. Bessie Johnson, known as Grandma Johnson, turned 100 years young on Saturday, and first responders wanted to make it a milestone to remember. 

Police and fire crews from D.C.'s Fifth District planned a caravan celebration past Ms. Johnson's house on Tuesday. Johnson has lived in the same house for more than 60 years and has lived in D.C. for more than 80 years.

We are wishing Grandma Johnson the happiest of birthdays as she joins the century club!

Here are some fun facts about what life was like in America in 1924, the year Johnson was born:

  • The country had 48 states
  • Gas cost about 25 cents per gallon
  • The Statue of Liberty was designated a National Monument
  • The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held
  • Among the most popular baby names were Charles and Dorothy
  • Kleenex facial tissue, Bit-O-Honey candies, and Marlboro cigarettes were among consumer products introduced in 1924
  • The Washington Senators were crowned World Series champions
