MABLETON, Ga. — The population of adults with disabilities is growing in Georgia -- but the programs available for them are shrinking, according to the CDC.
Right now, the CDC estimates there are over 2 million Georgians living with some degree of disability. In Mableton, one family is opening new doors for people with special needs to have the opportunity and a sense of purpose.
Head to Glenn's Café, where the "Million Dollar Chicken Salad" is the signature dish and the name on the front door signifies opportunity.
"You can see it in his eyes; he's like, that's my name. This is my Café," Jason Walsh, owner of Glenn's Café, said. "And it's always been his."
And though Jason owns the café, his business card read, "Glenn's Brother."
This year, Glenn moved in with his brother Jason and his wife to get additional support, making Jason one of 2 million people in Georgia caring for an adult with a disability living in the state.
"It's really weird because all of a sudden, it's plus one. The dishes there are more dishes. There's more laundry," Jason said, adding, "there's more love."
There's a lot more tenderness when Glenn is around. But also more responsibility. Jason takes care of all the cooking at the café, but it's on Glenn to bring in the business.
Jason said the joint venture feeds their souls and their local community.
"I knew he was capable of doing it; it was just giving him the opportunity," Jason said. "And it will be the same for when we bring other people in."
As the business grows, Jason and Glenn want to bring in more adults with disabilities and create meaningful job opportunities for a community that wants to be included.
