CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Clayton County tennis center that closed earlier this year for a major reconstruction project reopened on Wednesday, according to officials.
The center on Hwy 138 in Jonesboro closed for reconstruction in January.
Officials added that the reconstructed upgrades included the growing demand for pickleball adding six new courts dedicated to the sport. The project also included 15 resurfaced tennis courts with new fences.
Clayton County Commissioners and officials with the center held a ceremony to present the National Tennis Month Proclamation.
Commissioners allocated $600,000 for the project. Officials said the county's overall project budget for tennis reconstruction is $1.5 million.
“The recently allocated budget of $600,000, the project’s completion, and the County’s public declaration to its tennis community and racquet sports through the proclamation demonstrates its commitment to supporting the tennis community and efforts toward accessibility and inclusion in the sport," said Tracey Nicole Austin, Interim Director of Racquet Sports at the Tennis Center.
The Atlanta Tennis Group manages the center and has partnered with local organizations to enhance tennis wellness and pickleball offerings.
According to a news release, the center will also host the USTA Pro Circuit Tournament Souther Playoff Series on June 15, as well as a junior tennis summer camp and an adult tennis wellness camp.
