ATLANTA — Colin Kaepernick was in Atlanta this weekend, holding the Know Your Rights Camp downtown with more than 450 youth on hand, according to the organization.
The rights activist and former NFL quarterback tweeted a video recap of the event on Sunday.
"Atlanta we love you! Thank you for sharing your space with us and welcoming @yourrightscamp to your city," Kaepernick wrote. "Seize your power and share it!"
According to the Know Your Rights camp website, speakers included writer and professor Dr. Ameer Loggins, civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and other speakers from the worlds of tech, health and wellness education and finance.
Eric Reid, a current NFL safety with the Carolina Panthers and former teammate of Kaepernick's in San Francisco who frequently does activist work with him, was also on hand.
The group also produced a resource guide for Atlanta, which includes information about legal resources people have access to and their rights in encounters with law enforcement. It also includes lists of health, education and tech resources.
"Everybody is in this room because they love you," Kaepernick told the youth. "Feel safe here, this is your space. Feel free to ask questions, feel free to challenge ideas, that's what we're here for, to try to move forward together, benefit each other. How do we rise up out of the circumstances that we've been put in, that's what were here for today."
This was the eighth Know Your Rights Camp that Kaepernick has held in various cities. The mission of the camps, according to the organization's website, is to "advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders."
"I need you to walk in your power when you leave here today," Kaepernick told youth in his address. "Share that power with your community, share i-t with your family, share it with your brothers, your sisters, your siblings."
