STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Community members are raising funds for employees after a fire broke out at a popular DeKalb County bakery and German restaurant.
The fire started at Village Corner German Restaurant & Bakery on James B. Rivers Memorial Drive on Sunday, Feb. 4. According to DeKalb County Fire and Rescue, crews arrived to find a portion of the banquet hall storage area burning.
Officials added it appeared the fire may have started in the kitchen. This fire comes as the restaurant marks its 50th anniversary.
According to an online fundraiser, the restaurant will be closed for two to three months while they restore the damages.
"Our entire kitchen is destroyed, our party rooms. So far, it's pretty catastrophic," business owner Claus Friese previously said.
The community has raised over $2,000 for the employees who will be out of work for a while, the online fundraiser shows. Organizers are looking to raise a total of $4,000 for the bakery's employees.
"Thank you all for the overwhelming amount of love and support you all have shown us in this time. We are still in the investigation process of the fire and we have a long recovery road ahead. We will do our best to keep our faithful community updated along the way and hope to have good news in terms and reopening soon!" the restaurant wrote in a social media post.
