Peace rally to end gun violence planned in honor of 16-year-old killed

One year ago, shots rang out near the campus of Benjamin E Mays High, hitting several teens and killing 16-year-old Bre’Asia Powell.

ATLANTA — One year ago today, shots rang out near the campus of Benjamin E Mays High, hitting several teens and killing 16-year-old Bre’Asia Powell. Today her family will host a peace rally in her honor.

“I decided to do something big for my daughter because I know she would want me to do something big,” said  Nicole Williams, the mother of Bre'Asia Powell. Williams and her family have dubbed May 28th Bre’ Day, and to keep her memory alive, they are holding a vigil on the anniversary of her passing, which will include a moment of silence and peace rally.

“We’re going to start the march by the exist gate of Benjamin E. Mays High School, that’s where my daughter died at … and we’re going to walk towards West Manor Park where we’re finishing, to basically stand for mothers who have also loss a child or loved one due to gang violence or gun violence.

According to APD, back on May 28, 2023, a large number of teenagers came together for what officials have called an unauthorized gathering on the grounds of Benjamin E. Mays High when about 100 rounds rang out. Two people were shot, among them 16-year-old Powell, who passed as a result of her injuries.

“We want justice for Bre’Asia Powell, just like any mother would. I want justice; that’s all I’m asking,” said Williams, who adds the process of getting that justice has been slow, though three people have been charged in connection with Powell’s murder.  As their cases move forward in courts, Williams says she’s just forced to heal, not just for her family but for the community.

“I think our story may have inspired a lot of people to put down the guns; knowing your daughter died and it’s people that you knew had something to do with it is heartbreaking, and I just want the people in the community to know there are reactions for your actions,” Williams adds.
