GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County school bus driver was honored on Tuesday for jumping into action to rescue one of his students on his bus back in August.
On that fateful day, driver Jamario Felder saw one of the students having a medical emergency while transporting her home.
Felder jumped into action after contacting dispatch and 911, determining that the student needed CPR.
With a 911 operator assisting over the phone, Felder began performing CPR until first responders arrived on the scene.
When police arrived and took over CPR duties, Felder helped safely evacuate other students off the bus as more emergency services arrived.
According to a release from Gwinnett County, Felder "remained calm and maintained control of the situation" during the entire ordeal. The county added that Felder even had the foresight to "release the air pressure from the bus doors to ensure that emergency personnel could easily access the vehicle."
The young student was eventually taken to the hospital for treatment, but thanks to Felder's quick thinking, he likely saved her life.
On Tuesday, Dec. 17, Felder was honored by the Gwinnett County Rotary Club for his heroic actions. The organization gifted him with a check for $500.
