ATLANTA — For many metro Atlanta mothers, the everyday expenses that accompany caring for a baby can be expensive. That's why one mom is rallying the community together to shower moms-to-be with the necessities.
Brittany Samuels, a 28-year-old mother of two, is on a mission to offer support and much-needed baby essentials to area moms in need.
Samuels said she was inspired to help others after realizing how challenging motherhood can be.
“I wanted to create a platform for mothers to be able to get support. I believe we no longer have that village mindset as we had back in the day and I want to bring that back," said Samuels.
Samuels is asking the community to pitch in by donating all kinds of items new babies and their mommas need by Dec. 9.
“The diapers, the wipes, the bottles, the bibs," Samuels listed off. "We’re wanting to do gender-neutral baby clothes from 0 to six months because I do have a few moms who’ve signed up who’ve already had their baby," said Samuels.
Samuels also hopes to get post-partum garments for moms, gift cards and other items like swings, cribs and baby tubs.
She thinks the shower will help area moms enter motherhood with joy in their hearts— not stress.
It's something that maternal health advocate and counselor Erica Kelley thinks goes a long way toward maternal and infant health.
“Transportation, diapers, wipes, pacifiers, a good support system. All of those things are necessary because then you feel well-prepared," said Kelley.
The community baby shower takes place on Dec. 16 at the Oak Hill Child, Family and Adolescent Center in Atlanta. The Fulton County Board of Health is an event partner, which will feature games, workshops and resources to help new moms welcome their bundle of joy.
