Newborn saved by deputies in Oconee County escorted home by sheriff's office

When the two arrived, they said the mother had only partially given birth, but the baby didn't "have a pulse and wasn't breathing."

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies are being honored for their quick efforts that saved the life of a newborn child back in June 2023, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page on Wednesday.

It all unfolded on June 12 when Deputy Robert Perrin and Sgt. Daniel Ellis received a call that a woman had prematurely given birth and needed help. When the two arrived, they said the mother had only partially given birth, but the baby didn't "have a pulse and wasn't breathing."

That was when they jumped in to perform CPR and keep the mother calm until medical responders arrived to help and transport the newborn to the hospital.

"The quick actions of Deputy Perrin and Sgt. Ellis allowed time for Oconee Medical Responders and EMS to arrive on scene and transport the baby to the hospital," The post read in part. "Without their treatment it’s unknown if the baby would have survived."

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office said it had the pleasure of escorting the newborn named Riley to his Oconee County home.

"As Sheriff, I have encouraged the deputies to attend the Emergency Medical Responder course put on by Oconee Fire Rescue. I am happy to say many deputies have received this training," the post read.

The sheriff's office gave Perrin and Ellis the Life Saving Award for their assistance.
