Vernell Varnado, also known as "Poppa Snoop" was presented the honor at a veteran recruiting event at Atlanta City Hall on Thursday.

ATLANTA — Snoop Dogg's father received a proclamation from the City of Atlanta for his military service on Thursday.

Vernell Varnado, also known as  "Poppa Snoop," is a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Mayor Andre Dickens and Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department Fire Chief Roderick Smith presented the honor to Varnado at Atlanta City Hall at a veterans recruiting event.

"We wanna take this day, Mr. Varnado, to recognize you for serving selflessly and being injured in Vietnam," Smith said. "But more importantly, continuing to be a voice and advocate for veterans across the country and thank you for all that you are doing."

Varnado served as a cannoneer in Battery B in the 60th Artillery 4th Battalion, according to the city. He also entered the Army in December 1967 after completing his training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was then stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Rapper Snoop Dogg reposted his father's proclamation on his Instagram story, showing his support.

The proclamation reads, "We are now resolved that the members of the city council, on behalf of the citizens, do recognize our specialists for Vernell Varnado, for his heroic actions in the face of danger, on behalf of our country."

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also spoke at Thursday's event, delivering remarks and gratitude for veterans.

"Veterans show up with a strong sense of duty and responsibility. They approach their government roles with self-confidence, discipline and strong organizational skills," Dickens said at the event.

The city's recognition comes before Varnado receives his third Purple Heart for his service on Veterans Day.
